Music And Music Carol Of The Bells - 1699 Words

This concert was a series of performances by the Limestone College and Community Chorus, as well as a couple of performances by the Limestone College Vocal Ensemble. This is a review of the first half of the concert, which featured performances from the Limestone College and Community Chorus. Carol of the Bells (Ukrainian Carol) by Mykolo Leontovich (1877-1921) Carol of the Bells is a Christmas carol with a unique history. The beginning of what would eventually be popularized as a Christmas carol begin as a Ukrainian traditional folk chant. This famous Ukrainian chant was arranged and set to music in 1914 by Ukrainian composer Mykolo Leontovich. This piece, with its catchy 4 note motive which is developed over the course of the song,†¦show more content†¦This leads me to believe that almost all of the issues that arose during the concert were caused simply by the positioning of the performers in the auditorium. The Shepherd’s Carol by William Billings (1746-1800) William Billings was an American choral composer, and he is considered to be the first choral composer in American history. He primarily wrote 4-part a capella choir pieces. The Shepard’s Carol is a famous piece of his that is a staple of Christmas choir music to this day. The difference in the sound of the choir between the back of the auditorium and on stage is night and day. The stage made their balance so much better, with the bass and tenor voices resonating better through the audience. I also noticed how much stronger the intonation of the choir was when they were closer to the piano accompaniment. The different voices in the choir also have strong blend individually. Rather than it sounding like I am listening to 11 sopranos as indicated on the program, it sounds like I am listening to just a few because of how well those 11 singers blended together. Some people have had to overcome communication barriers. These types of barriers are caused when a person is sometimes too shy to either speak up or speak in public; they may have speech impairments, or are unable to properly pronounce words due to their accents. Some of these barriers include emotional, physical, semantic barriers, and infective listening. Emotional barriers affect those with low self-esteem. These types of people tend to question what they are saying. Physical barriers involve the environment. Semantic barriers are when you cannot agree on what you are trying to say. Whether spoken or written, they are merely stimuli used to arouse a response in the student. The student’s past experience with the words and the things to which they refer determines how the student responds to what the instructor says. A communicator’s words cannot communicate the desired meaning to another person unless the listener or reader has had some experience with the objects or concepts to which these words refer. Since it is the students’ experience that forms vocabulary, it is also essential that instructors speak the same language as the students. If the syntax (terminology) is necessary to convey the idea, ample time needs to be spent making certain that the individuals that you are communicating with understand that terminology. Now let’s explore some of the nonverbal. This specifically speaks about one thing body language. Body language includes posture, position of hands and arms, eye contact and facial expression. Children learn to read body language as a way to enhance understanding of the speaker’s intent. Body language that is consistent with the verbal content improves understanding. Body language that is inconsistent with content creates a question in the mind of the listener about the real message. For example, someone may be saying, â€Å"I really want to hear your opinion on this. † However if the person is looking away, has his arms folded or is typing a text message at the same time, his body language communicates an entirely different message. An element to consider is interference in other words, components that can interfere with effective communication. If the sender is angry, his ability to send effective messages may be negatively affected. In the same way, if the recipient is upset or disagrees with the message or the sender, he may hear something different than what was intended by the sender. Considering emotions, language and conceptual barriers is essential to effective communication. Effective communication is a reciprocal process that includes listening. Successful listening requires eye contact, objective processing and feedback to the speaker. Active listening may involve asking clarifying questions or restating what was heard to ensure that the intent of the message sent was correctly received. Active listening becomes particularly important when the communication includes emotional content. In conclusion the basic element of the communicative process indicates the beginning of the understanding required for the successful communicator. Advantages of group communication: In a group conversation, you will be able to get a vast number of ideas. You will also be able to hear a number of people points of views that may or may not fit in with yours; you will always learn new things. When having a one on one conversation, the other person may share the same ideas with you, so you will not learn much new things but in a group conversation there is always someone who either disagrees with you or knows something that you don’t. Disadvantages of one to one communication: You will not be able to think your answer through when you are having a one on one conversation because the person who you are having the conversation with will be expecting you to give them a reply as soon as they finish talking. So you won’t be able to deeply think about the situation and give a good answer. Argyle claimed that one tot one communication is essentially a two-way process that involves people sending, receiving and responding to each other’s verbal messages. Message understood- If the cycle went well then your message will be understood. If the cycle starts off well then the last stage will make it easier for people to understand your message. The cycle shows how people’s minds work while in a one to one conversation. Argyle shows us what goes on the persons mind and how the person carries out the action. Message received – The other person nods his head 5. Message decoded – *not sure if this person really needs a new car or if he just wants one* 6. Message understood – ‘Do you need a new car or do you just want a new car?’ In this example the message was not fully understood, but this is common because it is hard to understand the message the first time because of the person’s body language and facial expressions. Tuckman’s theory: Bruce Tuckman’s theory suggests that groups must go through these stages to be effective there are four stages: 1. Forming – involves group members who have met for the first time to share some information then coming together and asking basic questions about the purpose and aims of the group. In this first stage of group development, members tend to feel quite nervous. A leader usually emerges in this early stage. 2. Storming- this is when there is some conflict, tension and struggle within the group. Members of the group may argue over the purpose of the group. In this stage, power and control are the main issues. Eventually, the purpose of the group and the roles within it become clear. At this stage tolerance, patience and co-operation is needed or else the team will fail. 3. Norming- the group’s identity develops. Group agrees on values. The group arrives at one goal and agrees a shared plan to achieve it. The group members tend to work together to resolve conflicts, consciously or unconsciously. 4. Performing- when the group have established common expectations and values. They then finally get down to working effectively.
